Serbian has used both Cyrillic and Latin (Latinica) scripts historically. Church Slavonic Cyrillic adopted 12th century. Medieval Serbian used Cyrillic for religious/administrative texts. Ottoman occupation (1463–1878) suppressed Serbian but Cyrillic persisted. Serbian National Revival (18th–19th centuries) formalized two orthographic systems: Serbian Cyrillic (34 letters, standardized 1894 by Đuro Daničić) and Serbian Latin (Gaj's alphabet, adopted 1830). Both scripts remain official — Cyrillic predominates in government/media; Latin more common in younger/diaspora communities. Modern orthography standardized 1960 with post-independence refinements.

Serbian uniquely maintains two official scripts (Cyrillic 34 letters + Latin Latinica). Cyrillic uses 4 letters absent from Bulgarian/Macedonian (Џ Ђ Ћ Ј). Retains 7 grammatical cases with complex declension patterns. Stress patterns are mobile (word-specific, not fixed by position). Three accent types (acute, grave, rising, falling) mark stress/pitch — preserved in formal writing but often omitted casually. Post-1990s diaspora communities (USA, Germany, Australia) maintain robust script/language presence online.

Serbia 7.2M population; diaspora strong: USA 500K, Germany 700K, Australia 400K+. Facebook 4.5M Serbian users, YouTube 2M daily viewers. Post-2022 Ukraine conflict amplified Serbian language nationalism. Telegram widely used for political commentary. Diaspora communities maintain active Facebook groups + online media in both Cyrillic and Latin scripts. Serbia's daily digraphia is real typing behavior: the same person reads Cyrillic street signs, chats in Latin script on Viber — Serbia's dominant messenger — and switches back for official documents, where the 2021 language law strengthened Cyrillic's protected status. The diaspora doubles the demand: Vienna, Zurich, Chicago and Toronto hold huge Serbian communities typing on German, French and English keyboards, where neither Serbian Cyrillic nor the đ-š-č-ć-ž Latin letters exist. One browser tab covers both scripts' problem.

Write As You Speak

Vuk Karadžić rebuilt Serbian writing in 1818 around one promise: one sound, one letter, thirty of each. It’s still Europe’s most phonetic Cyrillic.

The perfect ratio

“Пиши као што говориш”

пиш

“Write as you speak, read as it is written” — Vuk’s rule gave Serbian exactly 30 sounds and exactly 30 letters. No silent letters, no spelling exceptions. If you can hear it, you can spell it.

Пиши као што говориш
One letter, not two

љ, њ, џ — digraphs fused

љњџ

Where Latin needs two letters (lj, nj, dž), Serbian Cyrillic fused them into one: љубав (love), његов (his), џеп (pocket). One sound, one key, one character.

љубав — love · џеп — pocket
Two alphabets, daily

Cyrillic and Latin, side by side

ђđ

Serbian is Europe’s only language in active two-script digraphia — street signs in Cyrillic, chats in Latin, both official. Every letter maps one-to-one: ђ = đ, ш = š, ч = č.

Србија = Srbija
The Serbian pair

ђ and ћ — soft and softer

ђћ

The letters ђ (like j in “juice”, softened) and ћ (like ch in “cheap”, softened) carry some of the most Serbian words there are — ћирилица is the script’s own name.

ћевапи — ćevapi · ђак — pupil

Everything you need to know about the Serbian keyboard

Serbian officially uses both Cyrillic (34 letters) and Latin (Latinica). Both are equal-status official scripts. Cyrillic more common in government/media; Latin in youth/diaspora communities.
Serbian Cyrillic has 34 letters (vs Bulgarian 30, Macedonian 30). Unique 4 letters: Џ (dž), Ђ (đ), Ћ (ć), Ј (j). Retains 7 grammatical cases.
Serbian Latin uses Gaj's alphabet (standardized 1830) — Latin script with diacritics (č ž š ć đ) representing non-Latin sounds. Official status equal to Cyrillic since 1960.
10-12 million speakers: Serbia 6.7M, Bosnia 1.2M, diaspora USA/Germany/Australia 2M+. Post-2022 Ukraine conflict boosted language nationalism.
Historical: Cyrillic from Church Slavonic; Latin from 1830 National Revival (Gaj's alphabet). Both maintained post-independence. Modern usage: Cyrillic official, Latin in diaspora/youth.
Yes — WhatsApp supports both Serbian Cyrillic and Latin fully. Copy/paste either script and it renders correctly on all devices worldwide.
Serbian preserves 4 accent types marking stress/pitch: acute (á), grave (à), rising (ă), falling (â). Preserved in formal writing/poetry but often omitted casually online.
Serbian and Croatian are mutually intelligible but distinct: Serbian uses Cyrillic/Latin officially; Croatian uses Latin only. Vocabulary differs slightly. Serbian Cyrillic Ђ/Ћ don't exist in Croatian.
Serbian retains 7 grammatical cases: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, vocative, locative, instrumental. Case marking affects noun/adjective/pronoun endings throughout sentences.
Church Slavonic Cyrillic adopted 12th century. Medieval Serbian texts date 12-15th centuries. Gaj's Latin alphabet adopted 1830 (National Revival). Modern orthography standardized 1960.
USA 500K, Germany 700K (largest diaspora), Australia 400K+, Canada/France/Switzerland 200K+ each. Diaspora maintains both Cyrillic/Latin script presence online via Facebook/YouTube.
Serbian is majority/official in Serbia and one of official languages in Bosnia. Diaspora worldwide. Post-2022 conflict boosted nationalism + language use online.
Use Serbian QWERTY (Cyrillic) layout, phonetic transliteration, or this tool. Serbian Cyrillic/Latin render on all platforms — copy/paste for universal device compatibility.
No — Serbian is official language of Serbia + co-official in Bosnia. Diaspora maintains robust communities. Post-2022 language nationalism ensures strong transmission.
Both scripts official. Mixing occurs in informal online writing (casual users mix scripts). Formal writing typically uses one script throughout (Cyrillic official, Latin in diaspora).
Serbian accents (á à ă â) mark stress/pitch — essential for formal poetry/academic writing. Informal/casual writing omits accents (difficult on keyboards). Proper accent use indicates literacy level.
Serbian is phonemic — read it as written (Cyrillic or Latin). Stress position varies by word (mobile stress). Accent marks indicate pitch/stress in formal writing.
Facebook (4.5M users), YouTube (2M daily), Telegram (political commentary). Diaspora communities maintain active Facebook groups + media in both Cyrillic/Latin.
