Mongolian has a unique dual-script history. The Traditional Mongolian vertical script emerged in the 12th century from the Uyghur script after Chinggis Khan adopted it in 1208. It uniquely writes vertically in columns ordered left-to-right. The Cyrillic script was officially adopted in 1941 under Soviet influence, formally replacing traditional script on January 1, 1946. Modern Mongolian Cyrillic uses Russian characters plus two additional letters (Өө, Үү). A major script revival began in March 2020 when the Mongolian government announced plans to reintroduce traditional script — aiming for both scripts in official documents by 2025 and full transition by 2030.
Mongolian is agglutinative with 8 grammatical cases and vowel harmony. Mongolian is tonal — pitch and intonation change meaning. The Traditional Mongolian vertical script is uniquely defining — written top-to-bottom in columns flowing left-to-right, unlike any other modern script. Unicode support was added in 1999, but proper rendering requires CSS writing-mode: vertical-lr and specialized fonts. Most platforms assume horizontal text, making Mongolian a constant technical challenge — users often switch to Cyrillic for compatibility.
Mongolia has 73% internet penetration (2.3M users) with 81% social media penetration. Facebook dominates (95% reach), YouTube (80%+), TikTok growing (40%+). Cyrillic text renders perfectly; traditional Mongolian script often renders incorrectly, forcing many users to use Cyrillic despite cultural preference for traditional script. Inner Mongolia (China) has 2.8M Mongolian speakers with similar digital landscape plus WeChat dominance. Vertical script technical barriers are the primary reason most online Mongolian is in Cyrillic, creating a digital divide between cultural heritage and platform pragmatism.
Modern Mongolian uses Cyrillic script (adopted 1946) with two unique Mongolian letters (Өө, Үү) that represent vowels absent from Russian.
Mongolian Cyrillic adds Өө and Үү — sounds absent in Russian. These vowels are phonemically essential. Without them, Mongolian words become mispronounced.
Mongolian vowels split into front and back groups. Suffixes agree with root vowel type, creating a flowing cascading pattern through words.
Mongolian is tonal — pitch changes word meanings, like Mandarin Chinese. The same letters with different tones become different words.
Mongolian has 8 cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, locative, ablative, instrumental, comitative) marked through case suffixes. Case marking is essential to meaning.
