What is dot art?

Dot art is a way of drawing pictures out of Braille characters — the little grids of raised-dot patterns that live in Unicode. Each Braille cell can hold up to eight dots in a two-by-four grid, and there is a character for every possible combination, from a single dot to a full block (⠁ ⠿ ⣿). Line those cells up and the dots blend into shapes: the curve of a cat's ear, the petals of a flower, the smile on a frog. It is all plain text, so a whole picture copies and pastes like a word.

That eight-dots-per-character density is what sets dot art apart from older text pictures. Classic ASCII art builds images from letters and punctuation, and emoji or block “pixel” art snaps everything to chunky squares — both are coarse next to Braille, which gives you eight times the detail in the same space. The result reads more like a fine line drawing than a mosaic, which is why a Braille piece stays recognisable even when it is small.

Because it is standard Unicode text, dot art travels anywhere words go — Discord bios and messages, TikTok comments, WhatsApp chats, Tumblr posts, forum signatures and usernames — with nothing to upload and nothing to install.
