Belarusian has used both Cyrillic and Latin (Łacinka) scripts historically. First printed Old Belarusian text: 1517 (Psalter by Francysk Skaryna). Modern Belarusian Cyrillic formalized 1918 by Branisłaŭ Taraškievič (32 letters). Two orthographic systems competed: Taraškievica (classical, 1918) vs. reformed standard adopted after 1933 orthography reform. Russian authorities banned Łacinka (1859–1905), resurged 1905–1930s before Soviet reforms. Contemporary grammar standardized 1959; amended 1985 and 2008.

Belarusian employs phonemic orthography (words written as pronounced), contrasting Russian's etymological spelling. Retains 7 cases (vs Russian's 6) with vocative forms. More flexible word order than Russian. Vocabulary closer to Polish than Russian, reflecting different historical contacts. Post-2022 diaspora surge (Warsaw, Poland) normalized Belarusian as cultural resistance; Telegram became activism space.

Post-2022 invasion: diaspora communities (especially Warsaw, Poland) surged language learning as cultural resistance. Telegram became key activism space with opposition channels using Belarusian. Diaspora-led weekend schools and streaming media normalized Belarusian domestically/abroad. Language use reframed as anti-regime statement. Belarusian also carries a letter no other Cyrillic language has — ў (the short u), celebrated with an actual monument in Polatsk — and two living orthographies: the official Narkamaŭka and the classical Taraškievica kept alive by the diaspora and independent press. That diaspora has grown sharply since 2020, from Warsaw to Vilnius to Tbilisi, and with it a deliberate online return to Belarusian by speakers raised mostly in Russian — people who need correct ў, і and ' on devices that default to Russian layouts. Telegram is the community's main square; a browser keyboard is often the fastest way to take part in it in Belarusian.
