You don't need to install a Bengali keyboard or change any phone setting to type Bengali on a phone. Open kactyl.com/bengali/ in your browser, tap the letters, copy, and paste into any app. But the on-device options are worth understanding too:
Avro Phonetic — the Bengali Habit That Moves to Mobile
On desktop most Bengalis type with Avro (“ami” → আমি). Android’s Gboard Bengali offers a similar phonetic mode, but iOS’s built-in Bengali keyboard is a fixed layout, not phonetic. Kactyl keeps the click/phonetic approach in any browser, so the Avro habit works on any phone.
iOS Added Bengali Late
Bengali arrived on iPhone relatively recently, and older iOS versions render some conjuncts imperfectly. If a juktakkhor looks broken, it’s the phone’s font, not your text — Kactyl outputs standard Unicode that renders correctly on up-to-date devices.
Typing Bengali Numerals (০১২৩)
Bengali has its own digit shapes — ০ ১ ২ ৩ — different from Latin numbers. On a phone keyboard they're on a separate number layer; many users forget they exist and type Latin digits instead. Kactyl's Bengali keyboard includes the Bengali numerals for fully native-looking text.
