Chinese is the oldest writing system still in daily use, with an unbroken line back more than three thousand years to characters carved on oracle bones. Unlike an alphabet, it is logographic: each character stands for a word or idea rather than a sound. Reference dictionaries record over 54,000 characters, yet everyday literacy rests on roughly 3,500, and China's adult literacy rate now sits near 97%. In the 20th century the writing was reshaped twice for accessibility — the mainland's simplified characters reduced the stroke count of many common forms, while Taiwan and Hong Kong kept the traditional shapes. Then, in 1958, the government adopted Hanyu Pinyin — the Roman-letter spelling system devised under Zhou Youguang — to teach pronunciation and drive literacy. Pinyin is why a billion people can type thousands of characters from a plain QWERTY keyboard today.

Chinese has no alphabet — it writes with thousands of individual characters, so the real question for any keyboard is how you reach them. This one gives you a grid of the most common characters to tap directly, plus a true Pinyin input mode: type the romanized sound and a candidate bar shows the matching characters ranked by frequency, so you pick 你 for ni and 好 for hao to build 你好 — the exact workflow of every phone and desktop IME in China. Tones are what make the sounds meaningful: the syllable ma alone spans 妈 (mother), 麻 (hemp), 马 (horse) and 骂 (scold) depending on pitch.

In China, WeChat is not just a chat app — it's the operating system of daily life, with over 1.38 billion monthly users as of 2024 handling messages, payments, mini-programs and official accounts. Weibo, Xiaohongshu (RED) and Douyin fill the rest of the screen, and every one of them needs Chinese input. Outside mainland China the picture flips: a diaspora student on a borrowed laptop, a traveler at a hotel PC, or anyone on a phone set to English suddenly has no Chinese IME installed and no simple way to add one. A browser keyboard closes that gap instantly — tap common characters or type Pinyin, choose from the candidate bar, copy, and paste clean Chinese into WeChat, Weibo, TikTok, email or a form, with nothing installed and no system settings touched.

Inside the Character System

Chinese doesn't spell words from sounds — it builds them from thousands of meaning-carrying characters, four tones and a set of shared roots. Here's how it fits together.

Meaning, not sound

Hanzi 汉字

Each character is a whole word or idea, not a letter. Dictionaries list over 54,000, but around 3,500 cover everyday reading — and China's adult literacy sits near 97%. 人 is "person", 山 "mountain", drawn from the shapes they once pictured.

中国 — China  ·  学生 — student
Pitch is meaning

The four tones

The same syllable ma means four different things depending on pitch: 妈 mother, 麻 hemp, 马 horse, 骂 to scold. Tone isn't decoration — it's part of the word.

妈 mā  ·  麻 má  ·  马 mǎ  ·  骂 mà
The building blocks

Radicals 部首

Most characters are built from smaller roots that hint at meaning: (water) sits in 河 river and 海 sea; (tree) in 林 forest; (mouth) in 吃 eat. Learn the radicals and characters stop looking random.

氵 + 每 → 海 (sea)

Pinyin 拼音

nǐhǎo

Romanization officially adopted in 1958 (architect Zhou Youguang) — it's how the whole country types. Our Pinyin mode works the same way: type ni, pick 你 from the candidate bar; type hao, pick 好 → 你好.

nǐ → 你  ·  hǎo → 好  ·  你好 hello

Everything you need to know about the Chinese keyboard

Turn on Pinyin (Roman) mode and type a syllable by sound, e.g. "ni". A candidate bar shows the matching characters ranked by frequency — 你, 尼, 泥… — and you press Space (or a number 1-5) to choose one. Type the next syllable and pick again: "ni" → 你, "hao" → 好 gives 你好. It's the same syllable-by-syllable flow as a phone IME.
No. Everything runs in your browser. Tap the character grid or use Pinyin mode, then Copy and paste. Nothing is installed and no system language settings change — ideal on a borrowed laptop, a hotel PC or a phone set to English.
The common-character grid and the Pinyin candidates use simplified characters, the standard on mainland China and Singapore. You can still paste traditional text into the editor to copy it onward.
Because Chinese has many characters that share the same sound (homophones). Pinyin alone doesn't pick one, so — like every real IME — the keyboard shows a candidate bar and you choose the character you mean. The most frequent one is listed first.
Mandarin uses pitch to distinguish words. The syllable "ma" means four different things by tone: mā 妈 (mother), má 麻 (hemp), mǎ 马 (horse), mà 骂 (scold), plus a neutral tone. You don't type tone marks here — you pick the intended character from the candidate bar.
Dictionaries list over 54,000, but everyday literacy needs about 3,000–3,500 characters. This keyboard's grid covers the most frequent ones, and Pinyin mode reaches thousands more through the candidate bar.
Yes — the keyboard outputs standard Unicode, so characters paste cleanly into WeChat, Weibo, Xiaohongshu, TikTok/Douyin, email and documents on any device.
You build a word syllable by syllable: type the first syllable and pick its character, then the next. For 你好 you pick 你 for "ni" and 好 for "hao". This keeps the right character every time instead of guessing among homophones.
Pinyin is the official system for writing Mandarin sounds with Roman letters. It was adopted in 1958 (its chief architect was Zhou Youguang) to teach pronunciation and raise literacy, and it's how most people type Chinese today.
Completely free, with no account and no download. Type as much Chinese as you like and copy it anywhere.
Yes — it runs in any mobile or desktop browser. Tap characters on a phone, or use Pinyin mode with a physical keyboard on a laptop.
Radicals are the smaller components characters are built from, often hinting at meaning. The water radical 氵 appears in 河 (river) and 海 (sea); the tree radical 木 in 林 (forest). Recognizing them makes characters far easier to learn.
In Pinyin mode the candidate bar lists several options; click the one you want, or press its number key (1-5). Space always selects the first, most-frequent candidate.
Yes. Type the pinyin of each syllable and choose the characters from the candidate bar. Foreign names are usually written with characters chosen for their sound.
Mandarin is the spoken standard language; Chinese characters are the shared writing system. The same characters are read aloud differently across Chinese languages, but written Chinese is largely common to all of them.
Your current text stays in the editor as you work and while the tab is open, so a long message isn't lost. Copy it out when you're finished.
Yes — typing a syllable and matching it to the right character reinforces both the Pinyin spelling and the character shape, useful for HSK study.
Yes — that's the whole point. Type here in the browser, copy, and paste. Your operating system's keyboard and language stay exactly as they were.
