Gurmukhi was standardized in the 16th century by Guru Angad, the second Sikh Guru — the name means 'from the mouth of the Guru'. It descends from the Landa and Sharada scripts of the Brahmi family, and it is the script of the Guru Granth Sahib, compiled in 1604. The core alphabet is the painti — 'the thirty-five' — later extended with six dotted pair-bindi letters (ਸ਼ ਖ਼ ਗ਼ ਜ਼ ਫ਼ ਲ਼) to write Persian and Arabic loan sounds. Punjabi is a two-script language: India writes Gurmukhi, Pakistan writes the same language in Shahmukhi (Arabic script). This keyboard types Gurmukhi. Gurmukhi's ordering is also unusual: it begins with the vowel bearers and ਸ ਹ before the classical consonant rows — an arrangement credited to the Gurus' pedagogical redesign, made to teach literacy fast to ordinary people rather than scholars.

Punjabi is one of the very few tonal Indo-European languages — three tones (low, high, level) that arose when the old voiced-aspirate letters ਘ ਝ ਢ ਭ ਧ lost their breathiness and left pitch behind: ਕੋੜਾ (whip) and ਘੋੜਾ (horse) differ by tone, and the spelling encodes it.

WhatsApp is the default messenger of Indian Punjab and of the family corridor to Canada and the UK. The Punjabi music industry is a global force — Diljit Dosanjh played Coachella, AP Dhillon and Karan Aujla chart internationally — and its lyrics, captions and comments run in Gurmukhi on Instagram Reels and YouTube (TikTok is banned in India, so Reels dominates at home while diaspora creators in Brampton and Surrey keep TikTok Punjabi alive). Facebook still carries village community groups and older-generation Punjab. Punjabi is also among Canada's most spoken immigrant languages — it's heard in the federal parliament, and Punjabi-language signage is standard in Brampton and Surrey civic life. That civic presence translates into constant demand for typed Gurmukhi: community announcements, gurdwara notices, matrimonials and local business posts all run in script, not romanization.

The Alphabet With Three Tones

Gurmukhi — "from the mouth of the Guru" — writes a language that sings: Punjabi is one of the only Indo-European languages where pitch changes the word, and the script encodes it.

The tonal secret

Letters that carry pitch, not breath

ਕੋੜਾਘੋੜਾ

The five letters ਘ ਝ ਢ ਭ ਧ stopped being voiced aspirates centuries ago — now they signal tone: ਕੋੜਾ (whip) and ਘੋੜਾ (horse) differ only in pitch, and the spelling tells you which is which. Almost no other Indo-European language writes tone.

ਕੋੜਾ — whip · ਘੋੜਾ — horse
The vowel bearers

ੳ, ਅ, ੲ — vowels need a carrier

A Gurmukhi vowel can't start a word alone — it rides one of three bearer letters: ਅ + ਾ = ਆ (aa), ੲ + ਿ = ਇ (i), ੳ + ੂ = ਊ (uu). Three carriers cover all ten vowels, and the keyboard places them for you.

ਇਹ — this · ਊਠ — camel
Three small marks

ੱ ੰ ਂ — each with its own rule

ਪੱਕਾਪੰਜਮਾਂ

The addak ੱ doubles the next consonant (ਪੱਕਾ — firm); the tippi ੰ nasalizes short vowels (ਪੰਜ — five); the bindi ਂ nasalizes long ones (ਮਾਂ — mother). Three marks, three separate keys, three rules Hindi never taught you.

ਸੱਚ — truth · ਸਿੰਘ — Singh
The dotted six

Pair bindi — letters for loan sounds

ਸ਼ਖ਼ਜ਼ਫ਼

A dot under the letter marks the six Persian and Arabic loan sounds the original painti never had: ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ (life), ਖ਼ਬਰ (news). Skip the dot and the spelling reads as village dialect — the keyboard gives all six their own keys.

ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ — life · ਖ਼ਬਰ — news

Everything you need to know about the Punjabi keyboard

Gurmukhi — the script of Indian Punjab, Sikh scripture and Punjabi-language schooling in India. After the 1947 partition, written Punjabi split with the border: Pakistan writes the same language in Shahmukhi, an Arabic-script system, while India kept Gurmukhi as the official script of Punjab state. Everything you type here is standard Gurmukhi Unicode (the U+0A00 block), so it's searchable, copy-safe and renders on every modern device. If you need Shahmukhi, an Urdu-style keyboard is the right tool — the two scripts share no letters.
Gurmukhi vowels can't stand alone at the start of a word — each rides one of three bearer letters, and the pairing is fixed: ੳ carries ਉ, ਊ and ਓ; ਅ carries ਆ, ਐ and ਔ (and is itself the 'a' sound); ੲ carries ਇ, ਈ and ਏ. So ਇਹ (this) is ੲ + ਿ, and ਊਠ (camel) is ੳ + ੂ. After a consonant you skip the bearer and attach the matra directly: ਕ + ੀ = ਕੀ. The keyboard shows the bearers on the layout, and phonetic mode picks the right one automatically.
The dotted letters — pair bindi, 'dot below' — extend the original 35-letter painti with sounds Punjabi absorbed from Persian, Arabic and English: ਸ਼ (sh) as in ਸ਼ਹਿਰ (city), ਖ਼ (kh) as in ਖ਼ਬਰ (news), ਗ਼ (gh), ਜ਼ (z) as in ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ (necessary), ਫ਼ (f) as in ਫ਼ੋਨ (phone), plus ਲ਼ — a native retroflex 'l' that many keyboards forget entirely. All six have their own keys here. Writing ਜਰੂਰੀ without the dot is a common spelling slip; the dot is what makes it standard written Punjabi.
The addak sits above the line BEFORE a consonant and doubles it — and Punjabi doubles consonants far more than Hindi, so it earns a dedicated key. ਪੱਕਾ (pakka — firm), ਸੱਚ (sach — truth), ਹੱਥ (hath — hand), ਚੱਲ (chal — let's go). It changes meaning, not just pronunciation: ਪਤਾ means 'address, known' while ਪੱਤਾ means 'leaf'. If your Punjabi text looks right but reads slightly off to a native speaker, a missing addak is the usual suspect.
Both mark nasal sounds, and Gurmukhi has a strict rule about which goes where: the tippi (ੰ) pairs with short vowels — ਪੰਜ (five), ਸਿੰਘ (Singh), ਪੰਜਾਬ itself — while the bindi (ਂ) pairs with long vowels and word endings: ਮਾਂ (mother), ਨਹੀਂ (no), ਹਾਂ (yes). Using the wrong one is immediately visible to any literate reader, roughly like writing 'their' for 'there' in English. Both marks have separate keys on this layout, so the choice stays yours and stays correct.
Punjabi did something almost no Indo-European language has done: it traded breath for pitch. The letters ਘ, ਝ, ਢ, ਭ, ਧ once sounded like Hindi's voiced aspirates — today they signal tone instead. At the start of a word they give a low tone: ਘਰ (house) is pronounced kàr, dipping down; ਘੋੜਾ (horse) is kòṛā, distinguished from ਕੋੜਾ (whip) purely by pitch. After a vowel they give a high tone: ਦੁੱਧ (milk) rises. The genius of Gurmukhi is that the historical spelling encodes the tones exactly — learn the rule once and every written word tells you its melody.
Type your message here, tap Copy, open WhatsApp and paste. The Gurmukhi is plain Unicode, so it renders correctly on every phone in the family group — from a new iPhone in Brampton to a budget Android in a Ludhiana village — with no keyboard installation and no language-settings change on either end. It works the same for WhatsApp status posts, group names and the desktop web app, which is where many people find they have no Punjabi input at all.
Yes — it's a web page, so it runs in Safari, Chrome or any browser: open kactyl.com/punjabi/, tap the Gurmukhi letters, copy, and paste into any app. Nothing to install, no permissions, no storage. Tip: use your browser's 'Add to Home Screen' and it opens like an app with one tap. Once the page has loaded, the typing itself — letters, matras, addak, predictions — works even if your connection drops.
Yes — phonetic mode converts as you type, the same habit Punjabi typists use everywhere: 'sat sri akal' becomes ਸਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ, 'mera naam' becomes ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ, 'punjabi' becomes ਪੰਜਾਬੀ. The engine handles the parts romanization hides — placing matras after consonants, picking the right vowel bearer at word start, and building subjoined forms like the ੍ਰ in ਸ੍ਰੀ — so you type the sounds you already know and get correct script.
Yes — the Guru Granth Sahib's 1430 angs (pages) are written in Gurmukhi, the same letters on this keyboard. The scripture's language is a blend scholars call Sant Bhasha — older Punjabi mixed with Braj, Persian and Sanskrit vocabulary — but the script is identical, which is why Gurmukhi literacy and gurbani reading are taught together. If you're preparing gurdwara notices, quoting a shabad in a message, or typing kirtan lyrics for a screen, this keyboard produces the correct characters, including the subjoined forms classical spelling uses.
Painti means 'the thirty-five' — the core alphabet every Punjabi child recites. Its layout is unusual and deliberate: it opens with the three vowel bearers and two fricatives (ੳ ਅ ੲ ਸ ਹ), then runs seven neat rows of five consonants ordered by where the mouth makes them — ਕ ਖ ਗ ਘ ਙ from the throat forward. The arrangement is credited to the Gurus' redesign for teaching ordinary people to read fast, not just scholars. The six dotted pair-bindi letters were added later, bringing modern Gurmukhi to 41 letters.
Almost none — and it's one of the script's kindest features. Where Devanagari fuses consonant clusters into hundreds of ligatures a reader must memorize, Gurmukhi allows just three subjoined letters (pairin): ੍ਰ as in ਪ੍ਰੇਮ (love) and ਸ੍ਰੀ, ੍ਹ as in ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ (to read), and the rare ੍ਵ. Everything else stays flat and linear, which is a real reason Gurmukhi is considered one of the fastest Indic scripts to learn — and why this keyboard needs only three subjoin keys instead of a conjunct table.
Switch the number row and you get ੧ ੨ ੩ ੪ ੫ ੬ ੭ ੮ ੯ ੦ — so 1947 becomes ੧੯੪੭. Gurmukhi digits still live in traditional contexts: Nanakshahi calendar dates, ang numbers in scripture, wedding-card dates and older land records, while everyday Punjab mostly uses Western digits. This keyboard offers both rows, so a gurpurab announcement and a phone number can sit correctly in the same message.
Three ways. The predictive bar learns the most-typed Punjabi phrases, so a few letters surface ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ or ਧੰਨਵਾਦ as one-tap suggestions. In phonetic mode, typing 'waheguru' or 'sat sri akal' builds them letter-perfect — including the subjoined ਸ੍ਰ in ਸ੍ਰੀ that trips up most keyboards. And frequently pasted phrases can simply be typed once here and copied whenever needed, matras and all.
Yes — tap the microphone and speak; recognition is set to Punjabi (India), so it transcribes directly into Gurmukhi rather than detouring through Hindi or English. It performs best in Chrome and on Android, where the speech engine has the strongest Punjabi model. Dictate the sentence, then polish the details the microphone can't hear — an addak here, a bindi there — from the keyboard.
Because Gurmukhi and Devanagari are entirely different scripts in different Unicode blocks (U+0A00 vs U+0900) — ਪ and प may look cousin-like, but to a computer they're as unrelated as p and π. A Hindi keyboard physically cannot produce ਪੰਜਾਬੀ; it can only write Punjabi words in Devanagari, which reads as Hindi to both people and search engines. If you want your text found by people searching in Punjabi — or read comfortably by family in Punjab — it has to be actual Gurmukhi, which is exactly what this page outputs.
Yes — everything you type is standard Unicode, so it pastes cleanly into Word, Google Docs, Excel, PowerPoint, email and school portals. No special font needs to be installed or embedded: modern systems ship Gurmukhi-capable fonts, and documents print exactly as they display. Students use this for Punjabi homework and exam practice; offices use it for bilingual notices — type here, paste there, done.
Baloo Paaji 2 — a rounded typeface designed natively for Gurmukhi (Paaji is the giveaway), not a Latin font with Gurmukhi bolted on. It keeps full-height matras, clear addak and tippi marks, and correct subjoined letters at every size. Note that copied text carries no font with it — it's pure Unicode — so your WhatsApp paste renders in WhatsApp's Gurmukhi font, a Word paste in yours. The font here is for comfortable on-screen typing; the characters underneath are universal.
Anyone typing Gurmukhi on a device that doesn't have it: office and library computers that block keyboard installs, a relative's laptop, school Chromebooks, internet cafés, and the very common case of diaspora families — a second-generation speaker in Surrey or Southall who talks Punjabi fluently but never set up a Punjabi keyboard. WhatsApp Web is the classic moment: the phone types Gurmukhi, the desktop suddenly can't. A browser tab fixes it in five seconds with nothing installed.
