How to Make Marathi Calligraphy

Type your Marathi text
1
Type or paste Marathi
Paste a wish straight from WhatsApp, use a Marathi keyboard, or type a name in English letters — "Atharva", "Sai" — and the converter writes it in Devanagari for you.
Choose a Marathi calligraphy style
2
Pick a hand
Book faces in the Nirnaya Sagar line for verses and names, pen and manuscript faces for invitations, bold display for Ganeshotsav banners. All 18 keep ळ and ऱ्य intact.
Export your Marathi calligraphy
3
Copy, post or print
Copy the text, post the styled PNG to a status, or send an SVG or PDF to the press — the outlines are the real font's, so a lagnapatrika prints as sharp as it looks on screen.

Beyond the Font: Marathi on Your Photo, Medallion and Card

The same 18 Marathi-tested fonts, set on your own picture, bent into a ring or a rayed medallion, and saved at the size the occasion asks for.

फोटो

Your Name on Your Own Photo

Pick a picture in the Photo tab and say what it is for — a profile photo, a WhatsApp status, a lagnapatrika, a Diwali or Gudi Padwa greeting, or an A4 print — and one tap sets the frame, the export size and a finish. The studio places the name by the ink of its letters, so ळ and a hanging ु sit where they should. The photo is edited inside your browser and never uploaded.

Behind
मागे

Letters That Pass Behind You

The film-poster look: tap Person and an AI model running on your device finds you — hair, shoulders and a padar or headscarf included — and draws you back over the letters, so your name runs behind your head. Tap Object to put a diya, a modak plate or a pet in front instead. The models download once — about 20 MB for Person, about 6 MB more for Object — and stay on your device.

Medallion
रांगोळी

A Medallion Drawn Like a Rangoli

Britannica traces the word rangoli to what is now Maharashtra, where a festival doorstep is still drawn by hand from a centre outwards. The Medallion layout gives your words that same centred order: a phrase circling the ring, a crown of rays, and a name — or an eight-pointed star — in the middle. Download it as SVG to cut, print or embroider.

Round
वर्तुळ

Round Text That Keeps ळ and ऱ्य Intact

Bending Marathi one letter at a time breaks the shirorekha into dashes and pulls the eyelash र away from its य. Arc and Circle bend the word after it has been shaped, as one outline, so the headline stays one unbroken curve and every conjunct keeps its form. Short names repeat until the ring closes.

१ २ ३

Up to Three Texts, Each in Its Own Style

A family name in Gold Foil, गणपती बाप्पा मोरया in Neon under it, a date along an arc — each text keeps its own words, font, finish and shape, from Tiro Devanagari Marathi to Akshar. Eight finishes in all, Gold Thread stitching and a Frosted Plate among them. Tap a text to select it; double-tap to change its words.

What Makes Writing Look Marathi

Same script as Hindi on paper — and a handful of differences a Marathi reader spots at once

Balbodh, and the hand it replaced

Marathi is printed in Balbodh — Devanagari as Marathi writes it. For centuries, though, Maharashtra's letters, land deeds and court records ran in Modi, a fast cursive traditionally credited to Hemadpant of the Yadava court, written with the pen barely lifting from the paper. Print favoured Balbodh: the Bombay Presidency decided in 1917 to replace Modi in administration, and its formal use ended in the 1950s. Archives such as the Peshwa Daftar in Pune still hold huge collections of Modi documents, and reading them has become a specialist skill.

ळ — the letter Hindi let go

Marathi keeps ळ, a retroflex l made with the tongue curled back, in everyday words: बाळ, शाळा, वेळ, पोळी. Standard Hindi has no use for it, yet every Devanagari font we tested draws it. Where fonts fall short is elsewhere: several lack ॲ, and one lacks ऑ as well — the two vowels Marathi uses for English loanwords such as ॲप and ऑफिस. Every font on this page draws ळ, ॲ and ऑ.

The eyelash र

In वाऱ्या, दऱ्या and सुऱ्या the र before य is not written as the usual hook above the line. Marathi draws a small crescent instead — the eyelash ra, encoded as ऱ followed by a halant. It is one of the clearest tests of a Marathi font, and one that many fonts fail, drawing a dotted र with a stray halant instead. No font that failed it made this list.

Marathi letterforms, switched on

Some type designers draw श and ल twice — a Hindi form and a Marathi form — and the font shows the Marathi one only when it is told the text is Marathi. Many websites never tell it, so Marathi online often appears in Hindi shapes. This page marks your text as Marathi on screen and in every download, so fonts such as Mukta, Gotu, Anek and Baloo 2 draw their Marathi forms.

Bombay's metal type

Modern Marathi print grew up in Bombay foundries. The best known is Javaji Dadaji's, opened in 1864, whose Nirnaya Sagar Press printed Marathi and Sanskrit books for generations. Its metal types are the model for Tiro Devanagari Marathi, a face that, in its designers' words, favours the vertical conjunct forms still found in Marathi literary publishing — which is why it opens this page.

A living calligraphy

Devanagari calligraphy is not a museum art in Maharashtra. R. K. Joshi, born in Maharashtra in 1936, was a calligrapher and type designer who treated Devanagari letters as form. His student Achyut Palav, who works in Devanagari and Modi alike, received the Padma Shri in 2025. In the 1970s Kamal Shedge's hand-drawn titles were everywhere on Marathi theatre and music posters. The display faces here belong to that public, poster-scale side of the tradition.

Which Marathi Font Should You Use?

Matched to the things Maharashtra actually letters

Lagnapatrika and wedding cards

Gotu for the names — its strokes come from a canted nib, so it reads as penmanship rather than type — with Tiro Devanagari Marathi for the lines underneath. Put ॥ श्री ॥ at the top, choose the Story or HD canvas, and send the press a PDF.

Ganeshotsav and festival banners

Akshar or Baloo 2. गणपती बाप्पा मोरया has to read across a pandal, so it wants heavy strokes and open counters. Both hold their matras clear of the headline at poster weight.

Abhang, ovi and quotes

Tiro Devanagari Marathi or Martel. A line of Tukaram or Dnyaneshwar deserves a book face, the kind it was first printed in, not a poster face. For an older, manuscript feel, Jaini Purva stacks its conjuncts the way a handwritten pothi did.

Names and profile art

Tillana is one of very few truly cursive Devanagari designs: the letters lean and flow as if written in one movement. For a name that should look drawn rather than typed, it is the first one to try.

Shop boards and signage

Yantramanav or Anek Devanagari. Shop boards are read at a distance and at an angle, and both faces keep long words such as व्यवस्थापन compact without crushing the conjuncts.

Logos and apps

Mukta or IBM Plex Sans Devanagari. Mukta comes from Ek Type, a Mumbai collective, and switches to Marathi letterforms when the text is Marathi; Plex pairs naturally with a Latin brand name beside it.

Why 18 fonts and not 60

We tested all 63 Devanagari families on Google Fonts against Marathi, not Hindi. Two favourites with real Mumbai roots failed: Yatra One, inspired by the painted signs of the Mumbai local railway, and Modak, which shares its name with Ganpati's favourite sweet, both broke महाराष्ट्र or ज्ञानेश्वर with a visible halant. Others drew ५ ८ ९ as Latin digits, or lost the eyelash र. A short list that writes Marathi correctly beats a long one that looks right until you type your own name.

Screen versus press

A Diwali ank cover, a lagnapatrika or a shop board goes to a printer as PDF or SVG: real outlines, so conjuncts and the eyelash र stay crisp at any size. A WhatsApp status or an Instagram post goes as PNG at the Square or Story size — the platform recompresses whatever it receives, so a vector gains nothing there.

FAQ

Marathi Calligraphy Questions

Is Marathi calligraphy different from Hindi calligraphy?
Both use Devanagari, but Marathi keeps the letter ळ, writes the eyelash र in words like वाऱ्या, uses ॲ and ऑ for English loanwords, and has its own forms of श and ल in many fonts. A Hindi-only font can fail on any of these. Every font on this page was tested on all of them.
What is the Modi script?
Modi is the cursive script Marathi was written in for centuries, especially for letters, records and administration. The Bombay Presidency decided to replace it with Balbodh in 1917, and its formal use ended in the 1950s. Achyut Palav, among others, still teaches and practises it as calligraphy.
Why does my Marathi text show Hindi letter shapes on some websites?
Because the page never tells the font the text is Marathi. Fonts that carry Marathi forms of श and ल show them only when the text is marked as Marathi. This page marks it — on screen and in the PNG, SVG and PDF you download.
Do I need a Marathi keyboard?
No. Paste Marathi text from anywhere, or type a name in English letters and the built-in converter writes it in Devanagari. You can then correct any letter in the box.
Which font is best for a Marathi wedding card?
Gotu for the couple's names and Tiro Devanagari Marathi for the rest of the text is a reliable pairing. Download a PDF for the printer so the letters stay sharp at card size.
Can I use these fonts commercially?
Yes. All 18 are published under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use, including on products you sell. The images and vector files you create here are yours.
How do I type the eyelash र?
Type ऱ (the र with a dot below), then the halant ्, then the next letter — ऱ्य. On the standard InScript layout, ऱ is Shift plus the र key. Any font on this page then draws the crescent-shaped eyelash form.
Is this free?
Yes. Every font, every layout and every export format, with no account. A small kactyl.com mark is on by default; switch it off with one tap.
Can I put my Marathi name on a photo?
Yes. In the Photo tab choose a picture and what you are making — profile photo, WhatsApp status, lagnapatrika, festival greeting or wall print — and the size, frame and a finish are set for you. Your photo stays in your browser.
How do I make a round Marathi name logo?
Under Layout choose Circle for a ring or Medallion for a rayed seal with a second name at the centre. The word is bent after shaping, so conjuncts and the eyelash र stay whole; download SVG or PDF to print at any size.
How do I put Marathi text behind a person in a photo?
In the Photo tab tap Person under Text behind. An AI model running in your browser finds the person and the letters pass behind them; for a diya or any object, tap Object and then tap it on the photo.
