Nastaliq vs Naskh — Why Urdu Looks “Wrong” on Some Phones
Urdu is traditionally written in the sloping Nastaliq style, but many phones render it in the flatter Naskh (Arabic-style) because they don’t ship a Nastaliq font. Your text is still correct Urdu — identical letters — it just looks less elegant. Newer Android and iOS include Noto Nastaliq Urdu, so the receiver’s phone decides the look, not your typing.
Roman Urdu vs Real اردو
A large share of Urdu WhatsApp chat is Roman Urdu — “kya haal hai” instead of کیا حال ہے. It’s quick on a Latin keyboard but ambiguous and informal, and it can’t carry Urdu’s poetry or honorifics. Kactyl types proper اردو script for when it should read as real Urdu.
